What Is Question 9?
The approval of question 9 in 1998 put Nevada on the road to it’s first Las Vegas medical marijuana dispensary. On Nevada’s 2000 election ballot, the finalized Question 9 had was proposed. Having to deal with the legalization of medical marijuana, and it’s possession and use. Nevada residents voted to pass this initiated amendment. This allowed card-carrying Nevada residents to enjoy the benefits of medical marijuana, and made Nevada a home cultivation state. This would go into affect in October, 2001. However, question 9 did not address how patients would go about legally obtaining medical marijuana. This put patients in a sticky situation; it is legal to have the product but not yet legal to distribute.
Why The Gap?
Although the people had spoken, legislators still had not written the best laws for medical marijuana distribution. It had failed to clearly address all of the concerns relating to medical marijuana. They wanted to make sure that they legislature that they put out covered all aspects of medical marijuana. This bill was revised a few times before it was allowed to go through all of the approval processes. Over the years there were amendments that would’ve made marijuana legalization “easier” that were not allowed to pass because there were loopholes with the legislate. Eventually in July 2013 the governor signed Senate Bill 374, Nevada’s Medical Marijuana Dispensary Law. This bill dealt with the details regarding things like using marijuana and driving, regulations for home growers, requirements for marijuana establishments, and more.
Legalizing The Las Vegas Medical Marijuana Dispensary
In July of 2015, the first medical marijuana dispensary in Nevada opened it’s doors in Sparks. Medical patients of all kinds lined up for the grand opening. Diversity within the customer base shows a good potential for expansion. However, dispensaries must be built with certain requirements. For example, you cannot build a Las Vegas medical marijuana dispensary too close to a school. Once someone obtains the proper licenses and gets the approval that they need on their location, they should be able to open a dispensary.
